SUMMARY:Volunteer Specialists Needed
DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, the Little Miami Watershed Network partnered with The Ohio State University to better understand just how much the river means to our region. The results were remarkable: more than 836\,000 visits generated nearly $15 million in local economic impact. That research gave us powerful\, credible data to demonstrate why protecting the river matters. To see the study done 5 years ago visit the link in our website under the News tab or click here \nNow\, in 2026\, we (LMWN and OSU) are doing it again — and we’d love for you to be part of it. Volunteer Specialists will help us gather simple but critical data at river access points by counting cars and placing a survey flyer with a QR code on windshields. There are no clipboards and no interrupting visitors — just a straightforward\, efficient process that makes a big difference. Volunteers are needed for various times throughout the months of April to October. \nFor more information email Volunteer Specialist Coordinator Torie Weslow at: volunteer@lmwn.org \nTo donate to this effort please click here

SUMMARY:Honor Your Mother Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Honor Your Mother Cleanup – Mother Earth \nJoin us on Sunday\, May 10th for our Honor Your Mothers\, by caring for Mother Earth at Morris Reserve in Bellbrook. \nThis special Mother’s Day community event is a chance to give back to the natural places that support our families and our community. Volunteers will help remove litter and debris from the trails and park areas surrounding the Little Miami River. By cleaning up trash before it reaches the river\, we help protect water quality\, wildlife habitat\, and the scenic spaces that so many people enjoy for hiking\, fishing\, paddling\, and relaxing outdoors. \nThe cleanup is family-friendly and a great way to spend meaningful time outside on Mother’s Day while making a positive impact. LMWN will provide gloves\, bags\, and basic cleanup supplies\, along with guidance on safe and effective ways to cleanup. \nBring your family\, friends\, and anyone who wants to celebrate Mother’s Day by caring for Mother Earth. Together we can keep our communities and river healthy for generations to come.

SUMMARY:River Speaks: Where Streams Begin: Measuring Headwater Discharge
DESCRIPTION:Where Streams Begin: Measuring Headwater Discharge at Carriage Hill MetroPark \nHelp us welcome University of Dayton professor Christopher Sheehan and graduate student Lauren Claas will speak on their research of small headwater streams. \nSouthwestern Ohio’s water-resource resilience is closely tied to the Miami Aquifer system\, which is largely recharged by small headwater streams. Headwater streams make up roughly 80% of all stream channels globally\, yet they have historically been among the least studied components of river networks. From 2025–2026\, speakers Cris and Lauren led a team that monitored water level and discharge in three headwater streams in Carriage Hill MetroPark. Using National Weather Service radar precipitation data together with hydrological modeling\, we quantified the relationships among rainfall intensity\, soil moisture\, and headwater stream discharge. These relationships will be used to evaluate future erosion hazards and potential changes in regional groundwater resources associated with land-use change and climate variability.

SUMMARY:Quarterly Corporate and Community Outreach Cleanups
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a mid-week cleanup in the watershed! New for 2026 we are offering quarterly cleanups to corporate and community groups looking to gain some team building while improving the environment.  Meet other businesses or groups that are prioritizing community service and stewardship along the Little Miami Watershed! We still offer private cleanups\, but this way you can plan an outing on a quarterly schedule. \nLast year we had a record amount of volunteer hours and trash taken out of the watershed. We hope to meet that again in 2026. We will provide a facilitator\, bags\, pickers\, gloves\, and other tools to get you on your way! \nEach Participant must complete our registration before attending using this link: Please register and sign our annual waiver HERE \nFor more information contact our team at info@lmwn.org \n
